Studies on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield attributing characters in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) moench)

Abstract: The present investigation was carried out at Horticulture Research Station, Dr. Y. S. R Horticultural University, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari district during kharif season, 2018 to study genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield attributing characters in okra. Analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among genotypes for all the traits under study, indicating a large amount of genetic variability in the germplasm. Higher magnitude of PCV and GCV (> 20%) were observed for yellow vein mosaic virus infestation on plants, fruit and shoot borer infestation on plants and average fruit weight indicating the existence of wide range of genetic variability in the germplasm for these traits. High Heritability (hb2) estimates (>60%) coupled with high estimates of genetic gain as percent of mean (>20%) were observed for average fruit weight and plant height indicating that these characters were least influenced by the environmental effect, since they were governed by additive genes and selection will be more rewarding if it was based on such traits.
