Mechanisms required to overcome the dormancy in ornamental plants

Author(s): L Gowthami and V Vijaya Bhaskar

Abstract: Dormancy is a temporary suspension of visible growth of any plant structure containing a meristem. It is an indigenously controlled but environmentally imposed temporary suspension of growth accompanied by reduced metabolic activity. It is a state in which viable seed fails to germinate even under favourable conditions of moisture, temperature and oxygen for vegetative growth. Seed dormancy and bud dormancy in ornamental plants can be overcome by different methods which are discussed in detail in the present review article.
